Hello December…the season of cheer and celebration and invitations from all sorts. The goodwill threaded through the holidays might have nudged you to say yes to be the +1 at too many gatherings. Instead of thinking, oh crap, here are a few tips on how to step outside your networking box and be the perfect +1.
☛ Be positive. (Yes, even if you are nervous about not knowing anyone). Smile with those who love this season. Roll your eyes with the Ginches…getting real now and then can actually help you be more positive.
☛ Get pulled into conversations with people who are not in the same industry? Not a problem. Be inquisitive and ask loads of questions. Listen. The best networkers are excellent listeners.
☛ Brag about the person who brought you to the gathering. Share their success stories. They might be even more likely to invite you again, eh?
☛ Offer advice from your area of expertise. Sometimes an outside opinion is more valuable than that of someone from the industry.
☛ The holiday season is a great time to talk more about the volunteer work that you do. It might even inspire a future do-gooder.
☛ Use good judgement when it comes to sharing contact details. Don’t be too pushy. Clink wine glasses not business cards.
And while we’re on that subject, keep an eye on your wine glass refills! It goes without saying, that you don’t want to be remembered as the +1 that got drunk and wore the lampshade. 😉
Happy Holidays! Happy Networking!
